I feel honored to write this letter of recommendation for Donald Schwartz as he pursues his career. Donald has proven to be a very influential member in the Fresh Start community—from his creativity and ability to motivate and inspire the membership to his genuine belief in people and their capacity for recovery. During Donald’s time at Fresh Start, he has demonstrated his natural leadership abilities and his talent for helping others in their recovery process.
Members and staff at Fresh Start have been very fortunate to work with Donald since he became a member over three years ago. Throughout his time at the Clubhouse, he has made several contributions such as taking the leadership role by running meetings, engaging members, and implementing new ideas and projects. One of Donald’s goals is to help to professionalize all of the processes at the Clubhouse, so members gain important hands-on skills needed when they apply for jobs in the community. Recently he helped transform our culinary unit into the likes of a restaurant, which includes both a serving and busing component. This helped to create more meaningful work for our members and allows for experience comparable to working in a professional kitchen. Donald is also pursuing his goal to help expand employment opportunities for members through social networking, workshops and ‘branding’ Fresh Start, which would encourage local businesses to approach the Clubhouse for potential employees. To date he has facilitated three well-attended employment workshops and has impressed us by his professionalism, knowledge and motivation as he leads. As an extension of the workshops, Donald is also assisting members in setting up blog accounts to promote themselves to local employers.
This determination that Donald has shown in achieving his goals is inspiring—he would tell you that he has encountered many challenges including his arduous struggle to receive Community Mental Health services, and the loss of his mother. Through-out this time, he sought the support of the Clubhouse and took the opportunity to learn from his experiences, such as refining his listening and social skills and asking for support with time management and budgeting. We intend on continuing to support him in his skill development and in his other goals as well.
Overall, Donald has been an incredible asset to Fresh Start as he always inspires members and staff with his leadership skills and influential ideas. He is reliable, patient, and professional and continues to serve as a positive example and mentor to other members. It is without hesitation that I recommend Donald for all of his professional pursuits.

I
am a Student Nurse who was assigned to Fresh Start Clubhouse and I have
had the pleasure of attending two of Donald's employment workshops. I
felt that his workshops were very helpful in teaching me about how I
should present myself in an interview, and it helped me to learn "hidden
meanings" in the questions you are asked in an interview. I was able to
apply these techniques I learned in the workshops at an interview this
last week, and I was offered the position. I feel that this can largely
be attributed to the things I learned in the workshop, and I am very
grateful to Donald for the things he has taught me.
